Professional day on biological diversity - walk along the fjord to Stokko
Time: July 5, 2023
Location: Meet at the convenience store in Undredal at 12:30
Joining us on the market day will be biologist Geir Gaarder. He is well-known in the area here, and has great knowledge of the biodiversity we find along the route to Stokko.
There will be several stops on the trip to see the various locations we pass. Most of the area we hike in is in Nærøyfjorden landscape conservation area.
There are hay fields on Stokko, and one of the topics we address here is what is the best way to harvest the species-rich meadows. Both in terms of forage quality and harvest time.
Some information about Stokko:
Areas along the fjord from the village Undredal to Stokko has been used for haymaking for a long time. It was, and is, crucial for livestock farming for the farmers in Undredal to harvest fodder in this area.
The long-term use of the area for haymaking has led to a high biodiversity in the hayfields. We find many species of flowers and grasses here, and there is a high biodiversity of insects.
The use of the area has led to many traces in the landscape of both earthen walls and stone structures. And several shelters have been built in the area.
Today's trip is from Undredal Stokko is very popular for hiking, and along the fjord many people go ashore for overnight stays. The interaction between outdoor activities, hiking, protected areas, biodiversity and active agriculture is extensive here.
