Study trip to the Fjord Coast Regional and Geopark

The World Heritage Park went on a study trip to the Fjord Coast Regional and Geopark last week.

On day 1 we visited the epicenter of the Fjord Coast Park in Hyllestad. We were given a tour of the Millstone Park in Hyllestad by the enthusiastic Alexander Rauboti. He explained how the occurrence of garnet mica schist in the area has resulted in the export of an estimated 1 million millstones to all of northern Europe. Who would have thought that millstones could be so exciting?

The trip then continued to Indrefjord Gard , where Ole and Ina Sognnes welcomed us and gave us an insight into their operations with Ung i Park together with Fjordkystparken.

Day 2 started with a visit to Lillingstonheimen , where we saw the ongoing restoration work by Ove Losnegård and heard the history of the house. We then went to Jensbua Coastal Culture Center , where we learned more about restoration and enjoyed the beautiful sunshine by the fjord.

We had lunch at Leonards Forlaavelse in beautiful surroundings – with delicious cheeses, cured meats and pie on the table. Afterwards we went to the coastal cultural monument Nilsbua . We definitely have to return here this summer!

We drove on to the Dale and Jakob Sande Center for Storytelling . Here we heard about exciting projects at the center from Rakel. We also met Espen, the geologist at Fjordkystparken, who told us about the geology in the area – and how it relates to the geology in Nærøyfjorden .

The ferry ride continued to Solund. Once we arrived in Hardbakke we were met by a herd of wild sheep grazing close to the center. In the evening we were given an introduction to the Coastal Culture Academy and Ung i Park .

Day 3 started with a visit to the hill behind Solund sports field, where a frisbee golf course and a hiking trail have been created in the direction of the day trip hut Sognesjøhytta in Solund. Here we were introduced to the important work of the Lyngbrennarlaget and the Villsaulaget in Solund to preserve the coastal heathland.

We visited the coastal arboretum and a gatehouse that has been established in the hiking area for common use. This was very interesting, and the group also got a visit from the sun in the beautiful surroundings. Of course, Maiken also had to study the cool conglomerate rock that Solund is made of.

The tour ended at the Fjord Coast Park's epicenter on the quay in Hardbakke. Here, a café and information point about the Fjord Coast Park have been established.

Thank you very much for three nice and educational days in Solund.
