Geology day in Lærdal
Nærøyfjorden World Heritage Park has had a geology day together with the 2nd graders at Lærdalsøyri School. They have walked along the river and learned how the landscape has been shaped by the free forces of nature that surround us. Gry has talked about glaciers, landslides and about the water in the rivers and waterfalls. They have also learned what characterizes valleys and learned how U-valleys and V-valleys are formed.
Gry brought a model of a glacier with him. The pupils were able to learn how the glacier has shaped the landscape, and by using "mini-glaciers" have tried to make scouring stripes on slate.
Together, they have studied the mountainsides around them, and looked for traces of landslides and rockfalls. They talked about how you can tell if an avalanche is new or old. They found that in Lærdal there are MANY traces of landslides and rockfalls. The pupils also talked about their own experiences: several have seen both rock falls and landslides.
They got to learn about the power found in large rivers, and how they shape the landscape.
They ended the day by making their own model of a valley. Then they had to use everything they had learned from Gry, and everything they had seen around them during the day. They thought this was very nice - time flew by while they were shaping their valleys!
