New leader and deputy leader of the World Heritage Council for the West Norwegian fjord landscape

The World Heritage Council for the West Norwegian Fjord Landscape has, as it were, the primary task of working to safeguard and promote the world heritage status awarded to the Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord areas jointly.

The mayor of Aurland municipality, Trygve Skjerdal, was elected as the new chair of the World Heritage Council for the Western Norwegian Fjord Landscape for the period 2020-2021 at a council meeting on 23 June 2020. The mayor of Fjord municipality, Eva Hove, was elected as deputy chair at the same time. The main secretariat follows the chair and is from now on attached to the foundation. Nærøyfjorden World Heritage Park for the next two years.

Comment from Trygve Skjerdal:

"The World Heritage Council's most important task is to help take care of our valuable and beautiful fjord landscape. Both our generation and future generations should be able to experience these unique values, and at the same time get a confirmation of how important the combination of housing, industry, nature use and traditions has been, and is, to taking care of this landscape. As leader of the council, I shall work actively to continue this".

Comment from Eva Hove:

"The World Heritage Council has a very important role and a great responsibility. The council must contribute so that the western Norwegian fjord landscape is managed in a sustainable manner. We must take care of these unique qualities for the enjoyment of both current and future generations. Being elected to the leadership of the World Heritage Council is of course both a great honor and a great responsibility. For me, this work is very important, and I look forward to the further work in the council."
