Mangesyslaren - Vik municipality
Hello,
My name is Ylva Hovland and I am in 10th grade at ABU. I have had work experience in Nærøyfjorden World Heritage Park. I was able to join Gro Bremer and Gry Mørk in Vik to have a cultural heritage event with 3rd and 4th graders from Vik municipality.
The pupils started by walking a round in the stand-sitjar environment at Øyri. On the walk where Gro told about people who lived in the area before and about the beach sitter environment, I took pictures. Throughout the day I alternated between observing, helping and taking part in the activities. I helped prepare seats and tables for the activities that I was to carry out.
Edvin Flåm explained and showed stoppers, he gave a stopper to each youngster which they had to polish and get to use later to stop holes in clothes. Vik husflidslag helped teach the children about wool. They got to try carding and spinning wool. It made me very happy when I saw how engaged the children were. They talked about how much they were looking forward to the different activities and when they got going they worked really well.
Gro and Gry made oatmeal for everyone who came. I had to stir the porridge every now and then, and it got quite heavy after a while. I should have butter for the porridge. Then I divided the children into groups, gave each group a jam jar with whipped cream in it and asked them to shake it until they got butter. The shaking was hard work, so I am very impressed by how good the kids were. Gro stirred salt into the butter and gave each table a bowl of butter. The butter became very popular, and the porridge was extremely good!
Gry and Gro had planned this very well. I got the impression that everyone got to learn something new and no one was bored.
I think it is very good that we, as young people, have the chance to have work experience in the places we want. Working in the park has been educational, and everything didn't have to be so formal all the time either, but you have the opportunity to have fun at the workplace and with colleagues.
