The county committee is positive about the world heritage centre

The County Committee views positively the plans to establish an authorized World Heritage Center for the West Norwegian Fjord Landscape, sub-area Nærøyfjorden in Aurland.

– We are the county in the country with the most World Heritage sites, and we must take good care of them. It is important that we develop the potential of our World Heritage sites in a good and sustainable way. I believe that a World Heritage Center in Nærøyfjorden will contribute to, says County Mayor Jon Askeland.

It is Nærøyfjorden World Heritage Park and Aurland Kjøle- og Fruktlager SA, which has prepared a preliminary project to establish an authorized World Heritage Center at Aurlandsvangen. They sent the preliminary project to Vestland County Council to get political support for the further work, and they got it.

The World Heritage Centre in Nærøyfjorden as presented in the preliminary project, is in line with both the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and the development plan of Vestland County Municipality . The establishment of the center is also in line with the goals of the regional plans for culture in the former counties. These apply until Vestland County Municipality has adopted its own regional plan for culture.

- Using existing building stock is good for both the climate and cultural history of the town. We have seen this done successfully in many places. It was some of what the director of the Kulturminnefondet talked about, and showed examples of, during the New Year's meeting earlier in January, says the county mayor.
